KNOXVILLE — On a hometown stage in St. Louis last March, Cuonzo Martin delivered an intimate maxim.

"You don’t know your future, you don’t know your tomorrow.”

Martin’s tone was reflective. It was the evening of the2011 Missouri Valley Conference awards banquet. The concentric circles of his life had converged to that single moment. His road from ramshackle East St. Louis, to high school basketball star, to standout at Purdue, to hobbled player with knees that didn’t match his age, to assistant coach at Purdue, to cancer survivor, and all the way to head coach at Missouri State, led directly to that day — the day he was named MVC coach of the year.
